Denis Leary decided the world needed one more 72 Virgins joke and he was just the kind of man to make it. Good man.

I don’t even know if I should be offended because I feel more irritated that someone thought this was funny. This was supposed to make us laugh! And instead it leaves me here cold, confused and in need of some kind of hard surface to repeatedly slam my head into until the world starts to make sense again.

If your sense of humor is as insulted as mine is — and if you have a sense of humor, it should be — you can send Denis Leary a nice ‘lil message here. Be kind, gentle readers, but make sure you include the words “bigoted asshole” somewhere in there.

My thoughts exactly. I won’t, however, be sending a message, as I think it’s best to let these sort of things die out on their own. If enough people create an uproar about it, soon enough, it’ll be on news sites and we’ll undoubtedly be seeing articles about how Muslims can’t take a joke or “every religion can be poked fun at, but Islam’s off bounds? Those Muslims are too uptight!”

They can come back to me when Jewish authors are forced to stay away from elementary school due to threats, or when corporations pull advertisements from television shows depicting Mormons in a positive light, or when nearly half of Americans admit to being prejudiced against Christians, or when nearly 4 in 10 Americans think Bhuddism promotes violence. Just to name a few. In all honesty, I’m not even offended by this. I may have even chuckled at this sort of satire in other contexts, but in the current environment it’s just too incredibly damaging for public perception of Muslims in that it reinforces negative stereotypes that are already extremely prevalent in the media. The reality is that a large faction of the American population will actually believe that depictions of Muslims like this are accurate, and an equally significant portion has the means to physically act on these prejudices. Until that changes, I’ll be sitting here with a straight face.
