Today, one of our drivers asked me to come meet all his colleagues at his other job, where he works as a record-keeper at the department of irrigation.

I got there to find a shabby building with no air conditioning, crumbling living facilities, and a field of marijuana growing in front.

But I also found 20 union workers who had all chipped in 100 rupees of their wage to buy meat (on meatless day) and order pure milk to make lunch especially for me. We ate a simple, traditional meal on the floor and then made chai afterwards. Everyone was so excited to meet an American; people were taking pictures on their phones and telling me about their families and aspirations. At the end of the day, one man invited me to his son’s wedding.

It was seriously one of the nicest things anyone’s ever done for me.
